People of Ezenwelike community in Eziora Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday protested alleged forceful takeover of Ezenwelike-Anaocha land by a certain private company.
They said the land had been lying fallow 41 years after its acquisition under the old Anambra State until the company suddenly surfaced to erect structures on it.
The protesters who displayed placards with varying inscriptions as, “Forty years after promise of industry a private company is building on our land.” “Gov. Obiano are you aware of the company destroying our cassava farm without notice?” urged Governor Willie Obiano to come to their rescue.
Addressing newsmen at the site located beside Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Chairman of Ezenwelike Community, Alex Asomba, described the land as their only inheritance from their fathers, insisting that their 41 years of waiting would not be in vain.
He said, “Successive administrations have come and gone after the government of old Anambra State, but none did anything on the land.
“We patiently waited for government promises of setting up different projects that never materialized, until the administration of Mr Peter Obi gave us back the land which we have been farming cassava on.
“Recently, the company came without informing us and cleared all the cassava farm in the massive land and when we asked the officials we saw there, they claimed it was given to them by government for industry.
“For what purposes does government take land if not for public interest, why private interest now? We have not given it to anybody because even when Chief Nwobodo’s administration acquired, it there was no agreement with our people, no Ezenwelike son or daughter has signed any paper ceding this land to the government.”
“You cannot just take our land without any MOU, dialogue or agreement with the community, it is not done anywhere. Before government takes over any land for any purpose, it must be gazetted and the people must be informed.”
