An awareness meeting of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ogidi, Idemili North local government area of Anambra state was suddenly disrupted by some thugs suspected to be hired by a lawmaker in the state.
The thugs, numbering over 50, allegedly accompanied Mr. Ifeanyi Arthur Chiekwu,
member representing Idemili North in the state House of Assembly to the venue reportedly disrupted the meeting half-way after they confronted the chairman of the council Chief Ralph Asha Nnabuife and other members of the party.
Trouble ensued when the lawmaker arrived the venue in motorcades with the thugs and parked his vehicle at the centre of the arena and was told to park outside the arena but he refused.
“His entry into the arena with his group of boys brought the meeting which had already commenced to a halt, as the traditional prime minister of Ogidi kingdom, Chief Ifeanyi Udokwu who was blessing the cola stopped until Chiekwu and his boys went round the arena and sat down with his boys standing at different sides of the venue.
“Chiekwu who seemed to have arrived the venue with bitterness, stood up and insisted that the former Chairman of APGA in the local government area, Chief Cletus Onwura must be recognized as incumbent chairman and consequently forcefully collected microphone from Master of Ceremony (MC) and handed over it to Chief Onwura to address the party members.
“When it was his turn to make a speech, the lawmaker lamented that his name was not in the list of the programme and accused the council chairman Chief Nnabuife of deliberate act, saying that he was elected member of the House and should accorded the respect.
“While the State Party Secretary Chief Tony Ifeanya was speaking, noise and shouts from thugs engulfed the arena which made the council chairman Nnabuife to stand up to calm some other party members at the meeting but Chiekwu stood up and shouted on top of his voice at council chairman and other party members.
“It was at that stage that the thugs stormed the Centre of the arena and joined Chiekwu to exchange words with others and confusion set in and the council chairman continued calming the party members and eventually stopped what would have been bloody clash,” a source narrated.
The party members, out of fear of the unknown occasioned by the state of confusion at the venue were compelled to disperse at the middle of the meeting to avoid injuries.
