The foremost Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, is battling yet another crisis relating to their upcoming election to produce the next president-general.
You will recall that ONITSHAGRA.COM had earlier reported that crisis had ensued when names of nominees for the election committee were announced, with Senator Ben Obi as the Chairman. Some influential members quickly opposed Senator Ben Obi’s nomination and mounted pressure until the senator declined the nomination.
This time, the issue is about the proposed venue of the election, Owerri, Imo State. An affiliate group known as Igbo Global Leaders is pressuring Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Mr. Nnia Nwodo to change the venue. Their reasons are that it’s against the constitution of the group to conduct the election in the same state that is supposed to produce the president-general, and that Imo State governor has vested interest in one of the contestants. The group rejected the reasons given by the current leader of the Ohanaeze, Nnia Nwodo, that Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma, is willing to host the election, and that Imo is relatively safe.
The election which is scheduled to hold in January 2021 is expected to be contested by Dr. Chris Asoluka, Prof. George Obiozor, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, Prof. Chidi Osuagwu, Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, and others.
