Ohaneze Ndigbo Set To Elect A New President General
The Igbo social-cultural group Ohanaeze has set up a 40 men Committee tasked with conducting an election in January that will produce a new president general of the group.
A little drama ensued two weeks ago when the incumbent President General presented the election committee list. Senator Ben Obi had been announced as the Chairman of the committee to which Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister for Labour and Productivity and Senator Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo State, strongly opposed. The issue was meant to be resolved at the meeting of members of the Imeobi which held yesterday, December 20th 2020. However, during the meeting, one of the aspirants, Professor George Obiozor, slumped and was rushed out of the meeting.
The objections to Senator Ben Obi’s appointment was resolved yesterday when he voluntarily stepped down and was replaced by Chief Garry Igariwey, former President-General of the group.
The meeting which was attended by notable personalities such as Dr. Ognonnaya Onu, Anyim Pius Anyim, Hope Uzodinma (governor of Imo State), etc., was concluded with the group resolving that the position of the president-general will be zoned to Imo State and that the election will be conducted there.
