A businessman, Mr. Major Obinobe has raised the alarm over alleged threat to life following his disclosure of information that led to the bursting of explosive device behind newly built Secretariat, Asaba, Delta State that would have claimed scores of lives.
He appealed to Inspector General of Police, Mr Alkali Baba Usman, Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and State Commissioner of Police, to protect his life from yet-to-be identified assailants, who he claimed had been trailing him for past weeks.
Addressing newsmen in Nnewi, Anambra State where he is currently taking cover with his family, the Delta born said he had been observing strange movements around his house after the incident.
He said, “Sometime in May last month, specifically the night Chelsea and Real Madrid played Champions League qualifying match, I was returning from a viewing center after the match when I saw someone standing on top of the fence behind the new Delta State Secretariat.
“Driving closer, I saw a parked tricycle with curtain around it. Being in a dark environment due to power black out, I felt something strange and quickly remembered the police call for, “if you see something, say something.”
“I quickly turned back and decided to run to the police headquarter, since it was close to the Secretariat. But on my way, I ran into Police check point and decided to inform the officers on duty what I saw.
“Initially, the officers were reluctant to go until I volunteered to take them to the scene with my Jeep. When we got there, the officers discovered some strange objects that had ‘detonate’ inscriptions on them. I took them back to the check point.
“While leaving, they asked for my phone number, claiming their boss would like to thank me for saving them from embarrassment. I obliged them and later got a text message from the Police that the objects were confirmed to be explosives.
“Few days after, the Police from State Headquarters called me to come over and meet with their boss. When I came, I was asked to make statement on the incident and I did.
“But one week later, I started observing this strange car trailing my car and two strange persons in my Close hanging from 6.30am to 8am, and I refused to go out for fear of my life and I have been wondering if I did anything wrong.”
Obinobe however explained that the last threat that informed his decision to leave Asaba was the experience he had last Sunday when he observed presence of two strange persons close to his house, apparently laying ambush for him on his way to church.
“I have called to inform Police Superintendent about my ordeal and plans to make it public. I’m appealing to the IGP, State Governor and Commissioner of Police to come to my rescue because my life is under serious threat.
“I equally appeal to the Department of State Services, DSS, the tate Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Nigerian Bar Association and Human Right Organisation to come to my aid because nobody knows who would have been victim of the explosive device if it was not discovered and allowed to explode.”
