Barbados become the latest Republic, cut ties with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State.

Barbados formally declared itself the world newest Republic at the stroke midnight, as the Caribbean island nation cut ties with British monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II, as its Head of State in a Solemn ceremony on Tuesday.

Symbolizing the historic handover, the Royal Standard flag representing the queen was lowered during a ceremony inaugurating the current governor – general,  Dame Sandra Mason, as the first President of the Republic of Barbados.

In this historical event attended by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, the Governor- general and incoming President of the latest Republic in the world said when taking the oath of office, ” I, Sandra Prunella Mason, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Barbados according to law, so help me God.”

This marks the end of Britain’s centuries of influence, including more than 200 years of slavery until 1834.

Further more in this new year, Singer, Rhianna, who was born on the island, was also honored as a National Hero as she attends the Presidents inauguration at heroes Square Bridgetown. recalls that in October, Barbados elected Mason to become its first President, one year after Prime Minister Mia Mottley declared that the country would “fully leave its colonial past.”

Some critics wondered why PM Mottley invited and honored Prince Charles with the ORDER OF FREEDOM OF BARBADOS, the highest National honor, since the British Royal family is seen as a source of exploitation in the region and as yet have not offered a formal apology or any kind.
