A former spokesperson for People’s Democratic Party spokesman, Olisa Metuh, has won a big court case against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Olisa Metuh was arrested and arraigned before the Abuja federal high Court alongside his firm, Destra Investment Limited by the EFCC. Charges brought against him were seven in number and bordered on illegally receiving about $2 million dollars from the former National Security Adviser (NSA) under the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration.
Since 2015, Metuh and his lawyers had insisted he was not guilty of any wrongdoing, until a verdict was given on February 25, 2020. The verdict had Olisa Metuh sentenced to seven years in jail. Though the defendant had since been in prison custody, he filed an appeal in March 2020.
Olisa Metuh’s lawyers were able to convince the appeal court that the judgment delivered by Justice Okon Abang of the High Court was bias and should therefore not be allowed to stand.
The appeal court led by Justice Adah therefore nullified the conviction of Olisa Metuh and ordered a fresh trial.
